Fatehpur Sikri
Situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh and founded by Mughal Emperor Akbar the city was capital of the empire until 1585. Visiting Sikri today will bring to mind a ghost city, with ruins of the bazaars and vacant imperial buildings still standing. The palace is built using traditional methods and influences in local red-sandstone and is a stunning composition of form and colour, surrounded by walls and a lake to one side.
More notable points of interest in the city include the Jama Masjid, Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal and Tomb of Salim Chishti.
Amber Fort
Overlooking the gardens and lake below, the Amer Fort is a structure divided into four with intricately detailed courtyards, private quarters and entrance gates that impress. Early morning, the fort glows golden between lush greenery, mountain background and the blue sky while in the evening, the structure’s warm hue is a picture you will not forget.

Jeep rides are also available but remember that it’s not every day the opportunity to ride an elephant passes by.
Pichola Lake and Palaces
Surrounded by incredible views and other islands built upon Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace complex is a series of architectural wonders in their own right. Developed over hundreds of years, marble temples, family mansions and glorious arch bridges have been added to the islands, while one has become a sanctuary for travelling birds. Good enough to be used in the Bond film ‘Octopussy’ and definitely one of the many highlights of India’s fantastic Golden Triangle.
